What is Carpet Binding? Glad you asked!
Carpet Binding is an edging that is normally sewn around carpet rugs to keep the edges from fraying. Binding machines are similar to a sewing machine but they are designed to sew this tape around the edge of carpet using a Zig-Zag double lock stitch or a straight lock stitch. There are portable and table top models and most have single or double pullers to help keep the carpet and tape straight. The tape used is usually made of nylon or cotton. You can see examples of binding on doormats, carpet runners, cove base and area rugs.
There was an older method of binding where the tape was glued and stapled to the carpet edge but that method is falling out of practice due to the labor involved. Plus, the binding machines give a much more professional look when finished.
ENDI uses all portable machines so we can quickly do custom work onsite or at our shop. Our machines all have the zig-zag stitch because we believe this is the best method for keeping the tape on the carpet without having the tape fray as well.
